Sunterra and Diamond Resorts International®
Diamond Resorts acquired Sunterra Resorts in 2007 during one of the largest timeshare industry acquisitions ever. During this time, Diamond acquired about 100 Sunterra properties in 13 countries, including locations within 17 U.S. states.
In an attempt to make the transition as easy as possible for Sunterra owners, Diamond kept some of their programs the same. For example, owners with Club Sunterra (a multi-destination points program) enjoy many of the same exchange and reservation procedures. However, now Club Sunterra members can also use their points to travel within Diamonds “THE Club” resort network.
Owners can still expect the same level of quality and service of Sunterra’s most popular resorts, like Sunterra’s Ka’anapali Beach Club and Sunterra’s Polo Tower Suites and Villas, under the new ownership. In this effort to not only uphold, but also complement, the respectability and reputation that the Sunterra Resorts brand was famous for, Diamond’s ownership made a “brand promise to offer more destination choice to [their] owners.”
In January 2008, Diamond Resorts announced it’s North American Resort Portfolio Expansion, which is set to add 14 new resorts in California, Canada, Colorado, Hawaii, Mexico, Utah and Washington. Of the expansion, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Resorts International, Stephen J. Cloobeck said, “The addition of 14 new resorts… and further expansion plans in the works, underscores the commitment to our brand tenants of simplicity, choice and comfort and our ongoing commitment to the owners.”
